The Cats of Mirikitani is shown yearly in a certain professors class at Stony Brook’s School of Social Welfare. I was fortunate enough to be introduced to it this semester. It is a documentary film about a homeless master artists who lives on the streets of New York City. Jimmy Mirikitani was a U.S. Born Japanese-American citizen interned in the Japanese camps of WWII. Jimmy passed away in October of this year. There is a memorial service for him on Sunday December 9th, 2012, 5:30-8PM @ 15 West 44th Street, 11th Floor, NY NY 10036
The film documents much of his life, and how a stranger, who happened to be the film maker, helped him get back on his feet. The movie offers a needed social commentary on war, race, mental health, and moving on. Nothing I have just said does any justice for this movie, which has depth, heart and a poignant message that should not be lost on modern Americans. Check out this link for more information on Jimmy. I remember this film! Aw man! He was awesome!
I just saw his face in “related posts” and I’m a little choked up just thinking about him. Next fall I will have to show this film knowing he is gone forever. RIP Jimmy. Gone but never forgotten.
We posted this as a tribute to Jimmy and your class 🙁
