Let’s get personal. As an engaged American in my late 20s I stress a lot about my upcoming wedding, job situation and well, basically, everything. I often find that many of the techniques people I know suggest for de-stressing now a days revolve around technology or alcohol, and for me that just doesn’t cut it. There has to be more to it than that. I often wonder what people in other countries or of other cultural backgrounds see as means of de-stressing, which is why I found this CNN Article titled “Peace on Earth- And In You” to be rather intriguing. The article takes quotes from individuals in several countries about what they do to de-stress and breaks them down into the why and what of how this can help you de-stress. Although some of the suggestions are cultural traditions dating back centuries, others are as simple as taking a walk. The bottom line? Don’t fuss, be social, be active, and positively distract yourself. Remember that stress often comes from the fear of not meeting the demands of our life, but often these are demands we put on ourselves unnecessarily. Take some time to change that mindset.
As a social worker, what do you do to de-stress? I feel we have a great set of tools that we assist others with, but do we apply them easily to ourselves to better our lives?
