Violence on the Israeli-Syrian border is escalating. Hamas continues to fire rockets into Israel; Israel is bombing Hamas. I could have written that 5,10,15,or 20 years ago it would hold true in some way or another. War always makes me sad. It is the most unreasonable of human responses to arguments that amount to a crisis of identity. As if Syria does not have larger problems with 40,000 people dead from civil war, the idea that they would engage with Israel now under those conditions is almost incomprehensible. Yet, Israel is “Ready to widen its offensive“.
An escalation worries me because I wonder how long it will be before America enters into the conflict. The nation has postured itself for a military response to the Syrian civil war; Israel’s entrance into the conflict will give us the excuse we need to engage. America cannot afford to do so. A Syrian conflict could draw America closer to war with a potential nuclear Iran. No other scenario scares me more . Conflict with Iran could mark the beginning of another world war.
There have been enough wars on foreign soil in a time when domestic matters desperately need attention. The strength of this country has never been in its military, it has been in the unrelenting growth of an industrial super power. Without domestic economic stability, the U.S. cannot afford to maintain the war machine that emerged in the 20th century. Still, the third Presidential debate demonstrated that U.S. interests continue align with Israel; how could an Israeli war be ignored?

Acutally, America may need to enter a war to PREVENT a nuclear Iran. That is something worth preventing. I doubt Israel wants to go to war with Syria – like Turkey, they are simply making it clear they will not allow their citizens to be hurt by Syrian military. Syria can ill afford to take on Israel.
War is a terrible thing- but at times there is no choice. Peace takes two partners- and when one teaches its children that Jews should all be killed, willing sends its children into harms way and combat, and repteadly attempts to slaughter the other side in war after war- well, one partner is clearly absent.
Would you allow routine, random gunshots into your home from your neighbor to occur? Even if the other neighbors blame you, saying that your home may have been your family’s home for generations, but those shooting at you had squatted in it for a bit, so you should just leave or let them kill you. That’s Israels’ position. They cannot back down- it would be a genocide, and we all know the world sent Jews back to Nazi death camps rather than accept refugee boats. If Arabs killed all the Jews in Israel as they want, the would would shed 3 tears, if that, and blame the Jews for daring to live in their homeland, instead of being the good, subserivent, easy to pogrom Jews of old.
I don’t wish war on anyone. It is a hellish experience. However, sometimes you need to fight to protect yourself. The world is not that nice to think diplomacy will always work. I hate the idea of the US entering into another war, but in this case I could at least be able to wrap my mind around the cause being just.
Every possible avenue must be exhausted before war, and we simply cannot get involved in another one in the Middle East. The nuclear threat is the scariest, but this isn’t America’s problem, it is the worlds problem. I don’t see why the U.S. should be paying for the conflicts that prevent the world from being destroyed. That and we happen to be the only nation that has ever used one. I want to see how quickly we enter into Middle East conflicts when we are energy independent, I am thinking our great alliance with Israel with fade with ever solar panel erected.
We’re slated to be the #1 oil producing nation in the next 20 years due to shale, barring enviro-nutter extremists stopping it. US should withdraw all aid to all nations in Mid-East, and let them settle it out amongst themselves. A lot of this is cold war history still playing out- Russians heavily support one side, US the other. This is why Iraq, Syria, Jordan, are armed with AKs and Russian equipment, and Israel is using surplus ARs. Regardless, US needs to let Israel defend itself- and the stalemate needs to end. No nation should live surrounded by permanent, unwavering enemies. Keep in mind this will NEVER change- for Jews to occupy the Holy Land is an affront to Islam, and in their eyes cannot be tolerated.
Agreed, but oil is not the long term solutions. I am banking on the giant ball of gas that has and contjnues to power all life as we know it, including the original production of oil….:)
