Even without reading the Harry Potter series you know J.K. Rowling’s name as part of the pop culture frame work of our world. Recently, she has moved out of the world of children’s novels and released an adult novel titled The Casual Vacancy.
The book has an English social worker, working with a family who experiences such things as child protective claims, drug addiction, and poverty, as one of the main characters. With themes of politics, social welfare and social justice laced into the novel social work is apparently portrayed in a realistic manner and some are claiming that this novel is one of the best social work novels ever written.
So, do you think you will read it? From a look at some of the reviews it seems to be an interesting piece of work which is for some too truthful and for others so honest it is perfect. Check out some of the Amazon Reviews to get an idea of your own.

I shouldn’t be, but I can’t believe I am about to read a book based on our macro project lol… Good one!
It’s not surprising base on her experiences. So great that a world renowned author has taken this step.
I did read it. It polarized the profession a lot, and it was focused on cps workers/case managers only. I’m not quite sure I felt about it. Maybe pigeonholed. It seemed a little as though the bad social worker was the norm an the one who did the job was the outlier. We don’t really need to further that stereotype. It also wasn’t clear is the term “social worker” was how we use it, of if it is a general case worker.
I have not read it, but loved the Harry Potter series.
I do not like reading the comment about the ‘bad’ social worker though. The profession has too many stereotypes as it is!
Case worker, depending on the country, could very well have a BSW or MSW in that role!
After I have read the stack of books on my night table and the 300+ on my Kobo, I might just read it!
