Have you ever stopped to think about the role of money in your life? Everyone’s life revolves around money: how much you have, how much you need and how much you owe. Where you wake up each morning, what you wear, what you eat, where you work, your form of transportation, etc. – each of these depends upon how much money you do or don’t have.
Money matters even if you spend most of your time trying to deny, avoid or ignore dealing with the reality of your financial circumstances. Regardless of how much or how little money you have, each day you must make choices about whether to spend it, save it, share it or grow it. Every decision you make makes a difference in your financial wellbeing.
Making better financial choices begins by knowing what you want your money to do for you. Do you want your money to go to interest payments on things you bought years ago and no longer have or remember? Do you want your money to provide you with a more balanced life or to continue to stress you out as it has been? Do you want your money to help you to retire one day or to cause you to continue working forever?
Your money does what you tell it to. It will never shout at you for over spending, and it won’t remind you to start saving. Those choices are yours to make. Once you understand and accept you are the boss of your money you will find yourself in a healthier relationship with it. When you begin to take control of your money you’ll find you also will begin taking control of all other areas of your life.
Tips to Empower You to Tell Your Money What You Want It to do
- Repeat this mantra several times daily: I accept responsibility for my own financial wellbeing.
- Spend your money on NEEDS (necessities), not Wants (things you like/want but don’t need).
- Understand you can change your financial habits (habits are learned not inherited so they can be “unlearned).
- Forgive yourself for past financial mistakes – holding on to them only keeps you stuck.
- Give yourself permission to create a better financial future.
- Set financial goals.
