Professional Social Work Class To Host PTSD Conference

Students of Chadron State College in Nebraska are tackling PTSD issues in their upcoming conference on November 13, 2013. Each year, the seniors of the social work class focus on an important issue to educate the community, and discuss ways to meet the needs discussed in the topic. This year, PTSD is at the forefront as the conference will cover PTSD signs, symptoms, and resources available. Representatives from two VAMCs will be present, as well as their keynote speaker Gary May.

CHADRON (Oct. 16) – The Professional Social Work Class 435 will host a post-traumatic stress disorder conference on Wednesday, Nov. 13 in the Student Center Ballroom from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. The conference, “Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: Veterans’ Invisible Wounds,” aims to provide awareness, knowledge and positive actions relating to the challenges of PTSD. Admission is free and open to the public and conference attendees receive a complimentary lunch.

 

The conference will provide the history, signs and symptoms and strategies for handling PTSD as well as providing resources for the community. There will be information booths, break-out sessions and speakers from the VA medical clinics in Cheyenne, Wyo., Hot Springs, S.D., and Rapid City, S.D.

 

The key-note speaker of the conference is Gary E. May, an associate professor of social work in the graduate program at the University of Southern Indiana. May’s background includes research and teaching in the areas of social welfare policy, disability issues, veteran’s affairs and post-traumatic stress disorders. May is a Vietnam combat veteran who was injured by a landmine explosion while serving as an infantryman with the Marines in 1968.

Each year, the senior social work class hosts a one day conference on an important social issue. The class must raise money for their conference through a variety of fundraisers and generous contributions from sponsors. Past conferences from the professional social work classes have covered disabilities, civility, and cancer awareness. These conferences give students the opportunity to contribute to the community and further their education by developing skills for their careers.
