The resignation of a Pope is not something anyone has seen in this lifetime, or many ones before it. Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation from the Papal throne will come as the first resignation since 1415. He will join only a small number of other Pope’s to give up leading the Christian world, and the first to do so due to poor health and age. Political strife or news of bribery for office tends to be the majority of reasons.
The office of the Pope is assumed to be one for life, ending only after death. Speculations surrounding underlying motivations have been swirling since the announcement came forth. Pope Benedict XVI’s reign has been marked by the dissatisfaction of sex scandal cases, protection of clergy and an inability to bring peace to warring religions. I don’t lay blame with the papacy for its inability to solve religious strife, however, the child abuse scandals and ideas regarding homosexuality and sex education is inexcusable.
It will be interesting to see the results of this event. A religious institution such as the Catholic Church has seen difficult times lately in regard to their following. The push for positive PR, and a more modern church that still upholds traditional beliefs is in jeopardy. Regardless of reason, which may or may not become public knowledge in time, we’re witnessing history in this announcement.
