Jerry O’Neil, the Republican legislator from Montana is putting forth a bill requesting that corporal punishment comes back as an alternative to jail time. Now I know that all fashions eventually come back, and it’s only a matter of time before the horrors of my childhood are seen as chic again, but really? Corporal punishment is the “new” face of the law?
This bill allows a defendant found guilty of misdemeanors-felonies to negotiate a punishment involving physical pain instead of jail time. The details of such punishments haven’t been discussed, but reverting back to the abuses of the past seem more barbaric than a lot of ideas put forward recently. Corporal punishment is still prominent in many countries true… Iran, Zimbabwe, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Nigeria to name a few.
It would almost seem as though people are so adamant to refute evolution that they are actively trying to decompensate. Or maybe they see the dark ages as a golden era of enlightenment, but I’m wondering how this discussion even got so far. O’Neil probably believes that this will be a deterrent for violence. After all, it has worked so well in the past. Perhaps next we can bring back forced marriages to correct the rates of divorce. Well, at least now we can use up all of our stored tar and feathers.

Unbelievable that this is an open conversation in today’s world with what we know of trauma, abuse, social learning…and that a US state legislator promotes such an idea says some very sad things about the mindset of our nation and it’s understanding, acceptance and commitment to youth and mental health.
Your evolution line is hilarious
