The ‘Golden Years’ as they were once called. A person would turn age 65 and retire and enjoy life!
Unfortunately, this is not reality anymore. Many older adults who are in their ‘golden years’ are struggling financially, cannot afford their medications and turn to community for assistance.
Some continue working if they are able to whether it is part-time or full-time as they cannot afford to retire.
“The share of Americans 65 and older in the labor force went from 12.1% in 1990 to 16.1% in 2010.”
“The growing presence of older Americans in the workforce is likely to continue. The Census projects a 67% increase in the 65-and-older population between 2015 and 2040, when one in five Americans will be 65 or older.”
Those 65+ that continue working, continue to pay into the system, are able to provide needed and necessary guidance to younger workers, have more discretionary income and enjoy life. We live longer now adays and could have another 25 years after retirement to support ourselves.
The photo is not the reality anymore of a older senior sitting and reading to children. The reality is older seniors struggling to make ends meet.
