A California advocacy group hopes to draw current and former foster youth to sexual health education with the most time-tested incentive there is: cash money.
John Burton Advocates for Youth is hosting a special workshop series on sexual health for older current and former foster youth in February, and is offering $200 for participation. The training series is part of a collective impact campaign designed to decrease unintended pregnancies among foster youth in Los Angeles County, an initiative supported by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation and directed by National Center for Youth Law.
Every Thursday in February, youth ages 18 to 24 with experience in the state’s foster care system will be paid up to $200 for participating in a series of classes that explore pregnancy prevention and develop greater awareness of HIV and sexually transmitted diseases. The 10 sessions during the series will use games, role-playing, video, skill-building activities and discussion to help youth learn about sexual health.
The series uses an adapted version of an evidence-based safer-sex curriculum that has been specifically adapted for foster youth, “Making Proud Choices for Youth in Out-of-Home Care.”
The classes will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. at Children’s Law Center, near the Edmund D. Edelman Children’s Court in Los Angeles. Dinner will be provided, and current foster youth can be reimbursed for transportation costs by contacting their attorney.
Interested parties can register for the series here.
