I was listening to Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song” this morning, and it struck me how remarkable it was that such a powerful message could be relayed even after a person has passed. A song isn’t the same sort of thing as a book; in a book the meaning can be conveyed but all too often the emotion is lost (maybe that is not 100% fair, but it is certainly not the same). A song preserves not only the meaning, but the emotional message of the author. I think perhaps that we take this for granted in our “enlightened age”.
It has only been for about 100 odd years that we have had the ability to look into the past and receive a message as the author intended. It has become normal for our lives to be recorded. Our emotional legacy, our message, for each and every one of us, will be accessible. How fortunate we are not not only hear the past, but to experience it in way that becomes tangible. It isn’t the same as an modern orchestra playing Beethoven; the orchestra is just a glorified cover band in this case. Imagine being able to hear Beethoven play his own compositions? Actually, I can imagine it. I was able to this morning, straight from the past, a man sang a beautiful song about peace, ,freedom, and love. Thanks Bob.
