Coordinating nicely with the article about loan forgiveness for MSWs, Metro news covers a recent trend in Toronto college students shows many looking for “sugar daddies” to help cover growing expenses of university life. These students are utilizing a specialized dating website that assists people find their “sugar daddies” and “sugar babies.” These “sugar babies” receive a few thousand dollars a month in gifts and money in order return for…well dating and looking pretty.
We all know the ongoing joke about strippers paying their way through school, well it was only a matter of time before the internet dating websites took advantage of this and created a site one step above prostitution. All legal of course. The argument is that this is occurring otherwise on websites, and this particular site just is honest about it.
Concerns about the borderline prostitution is valid, however, there is much more to be said about the rise in students using this service and the fact we don’t like to discuss cost of education. Toronto is head of the list now on Canada’s top 20 fastest growing sugar baby colleges with three colleges ranking in the top 3. It might only be a matter of time before colleges begin offering courses in how to attain a sugar daddy. Who knows?

As one who lives in Canada, Toronto universities costwise can compare to some in the U.S. Quebec has very low tuition fees so the ability to afford college/university is not an issue.
It is sad to think that female students look to ‘sugar dad’s’ to fund their expenses. Take out a loan, work part-time and attend university part-time. Life choices and lifestyle reflects on an individual. When one is looking for employment, this is not a card you want in your ‘stack.’
I think this trend is very interesting, and deserves a qualitative study to be conducted.
