This is just as bad, if not worse, than it sounds. Julie Keith, of Oregon, found a letter inside a Halloween decoration purchased in an Oregon Wal-Mart. The letter describes 15 hour work days without breaks or time off coupled with minimal compensation. Worse yet are the claims of torture and religious persecution. A transcript can be found here.
People who work here have to work 15 hours a day without Saturday (or) Sunday break and any holidays, otherwise they will suffer torturement [sic], beat and rude remark, nearly no payment (10 Yuan/one month).
People who work here suffer punishment 1-3 years averagelly [sic], but without court sentence. Many of them are Falun Gong practitioners who are totally innocent people. Only because they have different believe [sic] to the CCPG, they often suffer more punishment than others.
Authenticity of the letter has not been confirmed, but this should not come as a surprise as reports of such things have been a regular occurrence since the Cultural Revolution. In Tibet, monks have been setting themselves on fire in protest of Chinese occupation. I find it hard to believe that this letter isn’t real.
As usual, no ones hands are clean. China has become America’s landlord as they hold the title to the majority of the country’s debt. Who is not guilty of purchasing Chinese goods to save on cost? This is not just an American problem, the entire industrialized world has fallen into the globalization trap; there is blood on everyone’s hands. Wal-Mart has yet to comment, and the Department of Homeland Security is Investigating for all its worth.
