Recently, I was cleaning out my bookcase and deciding upon which books to donate and the ones I could not part with. I came across a novel I brought back my junior year of undergraduate called “Thank You For Smoking: A Novel” by Christopher Buckley. The title and novel description intrigued me….I had to read it! Well that I-had-to-read -it feeling turned into three and half years of the novel collecting dust on my bookcase, and occasionally coming out when the Spring Cleaning fever hit. Textbooks, exams, and papers became my primary reading material.
Well the Spring Cleaning fever hit again this week, and my eyes once again fell on the novel that I impulsively brought three and half years ago. I briefly flipped through the pages while skimming words as I wanted to get a feel for the novel. I intend to write a casual critique of the novel after I finish reading it. Personal choice to smoke and the actions of the tobacco industry is a heated topic in American culture. We can definitely see that as evident in the NYS. I want to keep an open mind as I read this novel, and treat it with positive regard as a social worker should do with a client.
