It is easy to become complacent about technology in our lives, especially the Internet. I hardly know a person who doesn’t own a phone, laptop and maybe even a desktop computer. As social workers it can be easy to forget that the technology we take for granted might not be accessible to the vulnerable populations we serve.
The article goes on to explain that this is a double edged swords. Many social workers come from vulnerable communities and did/do not have access to, nor education with, the tools that are becoming common place in social work today. This familiarity with electronic records and all sort of innovations that will come about in the coming years.
Lastly, there is some concern over students possessing the knowledge of what are appropriate actions for a professional social worker in venues such as social media, and perhaps even us lowly bloggers! A thought provoking article.
