Could the White House be ending the war on drugs? Top advisers recently came out with a statement about how addiction is not about crime, but about a biological condition. This could be the first major step to alter how we effectively treat those with substance abuse disorders. Instead of punishing all drug related activity, this possible shift could offer more recovery oriented treatment to those in need. This statement may have been in response to statistics showing how 8% or 21 million people with substance abuse disorders did not receive proper treatment. Those in the profession understand the frustrations trying to get appropriate substance abuse treatment for clients. If society began to realize the underlying disorder, rather than the deviant behavior we can take greater strides in battling this disease.
